NBC Universal, Inc.

Two high school students were shot and killed at a party in an apartment in Hartford over the weekend.

According to police, there was a party inside of an apartment on Hendricxsen Avenue on Saturday around 10:30 p.m. It is believed there were about 10 to 12 people there and all of them knew each other.

Officers responded to the apartment after getting multiple 911 calls about shots fired. Investigators are currently working to determine what happened between the people inside of the apartment and what led to the shooting.

At the apartment complex, police found two unresponsive males with gunshot wounds in the building stairwell.

The males, later identified as 19-year-old Lavante Brown, of Hartford, and 16-year-old Aydin Davis, of Bloomfield, were transported to Hartford Hospital. Both later died of their injuries.

The Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools said Brown attended Weaver High School and Davis attended the University High School of Science and Engineering.

Staff at Weaver High School remembered Brown by saying, "he was at Weaver for 3 years and was a quiet but intelligent student on track to graduate in the Spring. He was looking forward to graduation."

The staff at University High School of Science and Engineering said Davis "made a big impression on our community and his smile and playful spirit will be sorely missed by all of the UHSSE family."

The district said its crisis intervention team is helping students, families and staff. Counselors and social workers are also available.

In a message to the community, the superintendent wrote in part:

“We extend our condolences to Lavante’s and Aydin’s family and friends. We are extremely saddened by the loss to the Weaver, UHSSE, and HPS community. We will provide additional information as it becomes available and will make every effort possible to help our students, families, and staff as needed.”

The shooting remains under investigation. Police have spoken to several people that were at the party and said they are being cooperative.
