Suspected militants from the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram attacked the northern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Sunday, just hours before Secretary of State John Kerry was due to visit the country, Nigerian officials told NBC News. The fighters attacked the outskirts of the city, the capital of Nigerian state Borno, around 1 a.m. local time (7 p.m. ET Saturday), according to a spokesperson for the Borno Elders' Forum.
