Friday: Wintry wind with sun and clouds. Highs in the 30s, wind chill 20s. Overnight Friday: Clear, hard freeze, wind diminishes. Lows in the 20s. Saturday: Chilly, bright, much less wind. Highs near 40. Sunday: Breeze returns, increasing clouds, highs 50-55.
The first snow of the season is in the books for places like Montpelier, Vermont, Conway, New Hampshire, and Houlton, Maine. For the rest of us, it was just another chilly rain Thursday evening that resulted in spots of black ice and slippery steps Friday morning.
Temperatures crashed as the cold front pushed off shore early Friday morning. Now, we’re left with a freezing Friday wind factor — all day long.
Under a mix of clouds and sun, the thermometer may read close to 40 degrees in southern New England and 30 degrees north. But factor in wind gusting past 30 mph, this creates a wintry chill.
The front was fairly weak Thursday, but now it’s a powerful storm in eastern Canada, where they’re having another major snowstorm. For us, wind eases Friday night with the coldest air so for this season. Low temperatures overnight will be near 15 degrees north to 25 degrees south.
If you have not done so already, it’s time to drain the garden hoses and shut down the outdoor faucets.
The high-pressure system responsible for this cold weather is going to be south of New England Saturday. That’ll supply plenty of sunshine and less wind.
Also, when high-pressure moves south of us, the cold does not usually last that long. Under a mostly clear sky, it will be another freezing night. Low temperatures again will be in the teens and 20s.
But Sunday should warm up back to close to 50 degrees under a mix of sun and clouds. Wind will increase from the south, gusting past 25 mph.
Low pressure tracks to our north Sunday night, with a cold front arriving on Monday. The timing of the front is somewhat challenging. At this time, it appears the front will pass with just some clouds, so our Veteran’s Day ceremonies should be mostly dry with the temperature climbing into the 40s.

Cold-to-record-cold air will be over the Great Lakes States Wednesday, perhaps fueling a coastal storm along the eastern seaboard. The early call is for snow and rain developing Monday night or Tuesday, and continuing into early Wednesday.
There’s a good chance that even the coastal parts of New England may see at least a little bit of snow. And there’s a good chance that the mountains of New England will get more than a half a foot of additional snow. Then it may be our turn for record cold Wednesday or Thursday.
