Hilton Head Island -- one of JetBlue's newest destinations -- is home to some of America's most stunning and challenging golf courses. And with over 12 miles of white sand beaches, this semi-tropical island is also one of our favorite coastal destinations.
Summer starts early in Hilton Head Island, with warmer temperatures and water currents hitting the charming island in April and lasting through October. Even better? Now those pristine beaches are closer than ever, thanks to JetBlue's new daily nonstop service from New York (JFK) to Savannah/Hilton Head Island.
To help you start planning your vacation, we've put together a guide to five of Hilton Head Island's top beaches. From family spots to secluded wildlife areas, you'll find something to please every kind of beachgoer, sun tanners and surfers alike.
Coligny Beach
Coligny Beach is the most popular strip of sand on the island with families flocking to it all season long. Shallow water extends far out, making this the perfect spot for kids. You'll love the proximity to town, where you'll find Coligny Plaza fringing the water. Rent a bike here or treat everyone to ice cream at the acclaimed Frozen Moo (boasting 92 flavors). And, be sure to stick around for the live music at Center Stage (impromptu dancing is highly encouraged). If there's a rain shower, seek refuge by catching an indie flick at the Coligny Theater.
Fish Haul Creek Park
Wildlife abounds at Fish Haul Creek Park. Arguably the best bird-watching spot on the island, this is a tidal inlet located on the west side of Hilton Head Island. Channel your inner birdwatcher and be on the lookout for circling osprey, which dive at high speeds to snag fish just below the surface, or watch for clusters of scaup ducks forming small islands in the surf. You'll also spot loggerhead sea turtles trekking up the sand and bottlenose dolphins (there are 200 in this area) diving in the water.
Driessen Beach Park
The perfect spot for a picnic, Driessen Beach Park's wooded surroundings make it feel far more secluded than many of the others on Hilton Head Island. You'll stroll along a boardwalk through the forest, over sand dunes and tidal marshes. Kids will love the wildlife along the way, while you'll be charmed by the wide beach that opens up after the walk. Spread out on the sand or claim one of the many picnic tables for lunch.
Folly Field Beach
You won't find big waves on Hilton Head Island, but for novice and even experienced surfers, Folly Field Beach is a fun place to hang ten. That doesn't make it exclusive to surfers, however — a boardwalk, outdoor showers and seasonal life guards cater to all visitors.
Islanders Beach
A local favorite, Islanders Beach is the ideal place to escape the crowds, not to mention play in the water, whose shallows extend far out from shore. Want to stay close by? Check out the plush Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa.
