A police officer in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, has resigned after being arrested in a domestic violence case.

The Lunenburg Police Department said Monday that Samuel Christensen, a reserve officer with the department, had been involved in an incident reported to authorities on Sept. 21.

While the details of the case were limited, the department said Christensen had been charged with strangulation, assault and battery and intimidation of a witness.

Christensen has resigned from his position, the department said Monday.

"Members of the Lunenburg Police Department fully understand the gravity of domestic violence," Lt. Thomas L. Gammel said in a statement.
