A Connecticut company is recalling cat treats found to contain a chemical that can cause animals who eat them to lose coordination or show signs of depression, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd. — based in Wilton, Connecticut — is recalling Blue Kitty Yums Chicken Recipe Cat Treats over low levels of propylene glycol, the FDA announced Friday. The chemical is prohibited in cat food.
The affected products are sold in 2-ounce packages and were sold across the United States and Canada, according to the FDA.
The following items are affected:
- Blue Kitty Yums Tasty Chicken Recipe with UPC 859610007820 and best-by date of April 24, 2016
- Blue Kitty Yums Tasty Chicken Recipe with UPC 859610007820 and best-by date July 24, 2016
Cats who ingest the affected product may show signs of depression and exhibit a loss of coordination, muscle twitching, excessive urination and extreme thirst, according to the FDA, which has received one report of a cat believed to have fallen ill after eating the treats.
Pet owners who believe their animals are affected should contact a veterinarian.
