Officials in Yarmouth are mulling over the possibility of drafting a bylaw to handle an uptick in complaints about blighted properties.
Building Commissioner Mark Grylls said at a Board of Selectmen's meeting that the town has "so many complaints that we just can't keep up." The Cape Cod Times reports the town responded to almost 350 complaints reporting health and building code violations in fiscal year 2018 alone.
Grylls declined to give addresses for properties that have drawn complaints to protect the owners' privacy, but says he often hears that blighted property is impacting other residents' property values.
The town Building Department says it is working with volunteers who are researching bylaws already in place in other Massachusetts towns as a first step.
