Sequester Countdown at Three Days

As automatic cuts near, the impact becomes clear (Published Friday, Jan. 17, 2014)

(NECN/NBC News: Tracie Potts) – As more government agencies speak out Tuesday, people are getting a better idea of the impact of these looming budget cuts due to kick in at the end of the week.

As of Tuesday morning, there are no negotiations. Behind closed doors, no one's talking. So communities around the country are bracing for the impact.

Small airports could lose their overnight air traffic controllers. March Air Reserve Base may cut maintenance and pilot training on top of 20 percent pay cuts.

Among the first to disappear will be heating assistance, food for new mothers and money for school construction. Unemployment checks could take a 10 percent hit. And as of Tuesday, politicians are pointing fingers, not negotiating.

Officials fear the cuts could make the U.S. more vulnerable to terror attacks.

Tracie Potts of NBC News has more on the subject.
