Landlord Ordered to Fix Building After Fatal Fire

The owner of a Portland, Maine, apartment building where six people died in a fire last year has been ordered to fix code and safety violations at another building he owns.

The Portland Press Herald reports that a judge Monday approved an agreement between the city and Gregory Nisbet that requires him to remove locks placed on individual bedrooms, clean up garbage, ensure smoke detectors are working, and make electrical repairs.

The city got a restraining order a month ago to keep tenants out of the Dartmouth Street apartments, where inspections prompted by tenant complaints found violations.

Nisbet's lawyer blamed tenants for the violations.

Nisbet owned a property on Noyes Street that burned in November, killing six people in Maine's deadliest fire in 40 years. The blaze was ruled an accident.
