A local Target store is offering a one-day shopping experience tailored to those who find difficulty with holiday shopping or have a sensitivity to loud noises and bright lights.

The Framingham, Massachusetts, store on Cochituate Road is partnering with the Asperger/Autism Network for "Sensory Friendly Shopping Hours" on Sunday, from 7 to 10 a.m.

During those hours, the store will shut off music, dim lights and minimize flashing screens. There will also be a quiet corner where guests can relax.

The event will be open to the public.

"This is the first time we have held such an event," said Dania Jekel, executive director of the Aspergers/Autism Network. "Many people with special needs avoid shopping, so this is a way to help everyone feel welcome."

Target recently announced plans to open two more smaller-format stores in the Greater Boston area.

One store will open in the Porter Square neighborhood in Cambridge near the intersection of Massachusetts and Somerville avenues. The other small-format store will be in Burlington on Route 3A, just inside the Interstate 95 loop.
