A portion of the Maine Turnpike was shut down Friday morning after a tractor trailer slammed into a state police cruiser, injuring the trooper inside.

Police said Trooper John Davis was sitting in his cruiser in the breakdown lane on the Maine Turnpike in New Gloucester, near the Auburn line, at the time of the accident. He was investigating two cars that had slid off the highway and the cruiser's emergency lights were on at the time.

The cruiser was struck from behind by the tractor trailer around 5 a.m.

Davis, a 17-year veteran of the Maine State Police, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment of multiple injuries, none of them life threatening.

The tractor trailer driver, 28-year-old Aminder Munday of Westland, Michigan, was cited by state police for imprudent speed and a log book violation. The truck, owned by Northstar Carriers of Canton, Michigan, was loaded with food headed for the Walmart distribution center in Lewiston.

The Maine Turnpike's northbound lanes were closed from Gray to Auburn for four hours as state police investigated the crash.
