Mold found in the school that serves students in the Vermont towns of Pomfret and Bridgewater means elementary school students will start the year in the neighboring community of Woodstock.

The Valley News reports the mold, Aspergillus, which is commonly found in low concentrations in the atmosphere, was found at the Prosper Valley School.

The mold can cause health problems for those with asthma, lung problems, allergies or compromised immune systems.

Superintendent Mary Beth Banios says the safety of students is the first priority.

Woodstock Elementary opened last week, but the Prosper Valley students will join them Sept. 4.

Banios says work is underway to find a comprehensive solution the problem.

The Vermont Agency of Education says that last year Prosper Valley had 99 students while Woodstock Elementary had 196.
