After months of debate and push back from many in town, Northeastern University says it is moving forward with plans to expand its Marine Science Center in Nahant.
In March, many neighbors told us they opposed the project, fearing a bigger facility would harm the environment around the East Point section of town.
According to the University, it’s in the process of getting permits for the project. It called the final plans a “compromise”, based on feedback it received from the community.
The proposed expansion will total 55,000 square feet, Northeastern said in a letter to the town, with some of that sitting on top of an existing military bunker on the property.
The University added that it also changed its plans for its seawater discharge system based on concerns from neighbors.
Even though Northeastern says it will invest in town road and sewer projects—as part of the compromise—many neighbors say they remain disappointed, and will continue to fight the project.
