The police chief in Weare, New Hampshire, has offered his resignation following accusations that he assaulted his personal assistant, with whom he had an affair and who got a restraining order against him.

John Velleca has been on leave since the accusations were made public last month. On Thursday, state Attorney General Joseph Foster said there's no evidence Velleca assaulted Jennifer Posteraro. He said the credibility of both is tainted, but there was not enough evidence to bring a criminal case against the chief.

The Concord Monitor reports Velleca submitted a resignation letter to the town Thursday afternoon. Selectboard Chairman Tom Clow says the board will meet Monday and decide whether to accept it.
