A scholarship named for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer killed by the Boston Marathon bombers was given out for the first time on Thursday.

Sean Collier Memorial Scholarship was awarded at Salem State University's annual criminal justice department banquet at 5 p.m. Sophomore Danalee Williams, a criminal justice student, will receive $1,000 a year until graduation, as long as she remains in good academic standing.

Criminal justice professor Ed LeClaire says the scholarship could not be awarded until it reached the $25,000 threshold, which it did in December with a gift from Collier's family.

Collier was a 2009 graduate of Salem State. He died April 18, 2013, at age 26.
