    Icy Start for Holiday Weekend

Today (Friday): Cloudy with snow and mixed showers developing. Highs in the low 30s. Overnight Friday Night: Mixed showers, snow to mix north. Lows in the 30s south, 20s north. Saturday: Rain south, ice deep inland and north. Highs in the mid 40s south, mid 30s north. Sunday: Increasing sun with highs in the mid 30s. (Published Friday, Dec. 22, 2017)

Our first round of winter weather for the holiday weekend has arrived and most of us will see snow to start.

Though Connecticut, Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts will be south of most of the action, Friday afternoon and evening will bring deteriorating road conditions to the Worcester/Boston corridor with the steadiest snow of the event for that area and snow continuing to fall farther north.

Precipitation will taper markedly after dinner Friday evening and temperatures will very slowly start to rise, though interior Southern New England — including the Interstate 95 corridor — and points north will see cold air holding stubborn enough to stay below freezing, even as new precipitation arrives Saturday morning for a round of light freezing rain.

The transition to plain rain from south to north will be slow during Saturday, with significant icing possible in interior New Hampshire and Maine.

One last gasp of snow in the mountains Saturday night marks the departure of this storm, then a quiet and fair Sunday, good for travel.

Midnight on Christmas Eve will not only bring Santa’s sleigh, but those bells will ring in another round of likely plowable snow through Christmas morning, departing by midday but putting a fresh blanket on most of New England before cold air takes hold for next week through the New Year in the exclusive Early Warning Weather 10-day forecast.
