BOSTON (AP) — Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian (koh-TOO'-zhen) is holding a fundraising edge over fellow Democrats in the special election for Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District seat.

Koutoujian reported having more than $690,000 in his account heading into the final campaign stretch.

That's far ahead of his next closest competitor, state Sen. Katherine Clark, who had about $393,000 in her account. Clark's total includes $250,000 the Melrose Democrat contributed to her campaign.

Federal Election Commission reports show three other Democrats with significant fundraising totals.

Medford state Rep. Carl Sciortino (SHUR'-tee-noh), had about $285,000. Belmont state Sen. William Brownsberger had nearly $239,000. Ashland state Sen. Karen Spilka had about $132,000.

Two other Democrats and three Republican candidates each reported far smaller campaign sums.

The primary to fill the U.S. House seat left vacant by Edward Markey's election to the Senate is Oct. 15.
