(NECN/KCBS/KCAL) - It wasn't a bird or a plane, actually, officials are not sure what it was, just yet.

In this video you can see something going into the air -- a red trail of smoke -- off the coast of Southern California, near Los Angeles on Monday night.

A spokesperson for the Navy says no activities were planned in the area at that time.

On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force says it sent a rocket skyward, but an official says there have been no launches since then.

Local media showed the video to former Deputy Secretary of Defense and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth.

He said Americans should wait for answers from the military.
