BUFFALO – It was perhaps symbolic that Daniel Paille missed way high and wide with his final warm-up shot while Tyler Seguin rapidly buried his underneath the crossbar. It may represent the long-term futures of both players: Paille the veteran journeyman, Seguin the heralded prospect.

But on Wednesday night at least, it didn't matter. Coach Claude Julien chose to play Paille against his former team, the Sabres, and make Seguin a healthy scratch for the first time in his young career.

It was the second game in a row missed by Seguin, who sat out Saturday night's overtime loss to the Flyers because of the flu.

"You'd like to see him play as much as he can, but I also don't think it's a big issue if [Seguin] misses a few games," said Julien prior to Wednesday night’s game. "I think our schedule is a lot tougher than the ones in junior. Our trips and how we're playing the numerous back-to-back games in different cities on a second night, and so on. It's not a bad thing for a young player to learn a few things by watching.

"You don't want to put him in the stands forever, but . . . it's certainly not about it being a punishment. You hope it's from learning things and making tough decisions. Sometimes it's not so much about the individual, but it's more about the message you're sending the team. If you're going to pull a guy out that's playing well just to make space . . . that's not the right message.”

bullet.gif Mark Recchi played in his 1,600th NHL game Wednesday. He ranks ninth all-time on the NHL's games-played list and is only 12 behind Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque for eighth place.

The Sports Hub 98.5 had Recchi on the air Wednesday to congratulate him on his new milestone. "It means to me that I'm [getting] really old,” said Recchi.

bullet.gif Steve Kampfer really jumped out of his shell in his third game this season, and it appeared that maybe his mind is beginning to catch up with his body. The 22-year-old finished with an amazing 20:19 of ice time and collected his first NHL point when he racked up an assist on Michael Ryder's goal.
