| June 16, 2009 Obama reiterates commitment to denuclearization of Korean Peninsula

(NECN: Washington) - President Barack Obama this morning met with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak at the White House.
"Today, President Lee and I reiterated our shared commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," said Obama.
"North Korea will not find security or respect through threats and illegal weapons," said Obama.
Obama said that the United States and other nations "must
pursue a sustained and robust effort" to implement the latest
United Nations resolution aimed at punishing the reclusive nation
for its nuclear activities.
"There is another path available to North Korea. A path that leads to peace and economic opportunity," said Obama.
North Korea on May 25 conducted an underground nuclear test and
subsequently test-fired a series of short-range ground to air
missiles.
