| October 6, 2009 McCain: Dalai Lama is 'inspiration to all people'

(NECN: Washington) - The Dalai Lama today is receiving the Lantos Human Rights Prize. The award is in memory of the late Rep. Tom Lantos.
Those who advocate for Tibet see the Dalai Lama's White House visits as important messages of support for Tibetans and others struggling for human rights.
"We can't replace Tom's voice, but we can help and ensure it is not forgotten...liberty is the right of mankind," said Senator John McCain.
"Human rights are not an invention of America...they are universal...as long as reflective people have lived, they have identified those universal liberties that separate us from the animals," said McCain.
"The Dalai Lama has spent his life in the passionate, tireless and nonviolent defense of his people's right to self-determination and dignity," said McCain. "He has led their struggle."
"He has endured long, trying years and every setback for their cause," said McCain. "He is an inspiration to all people who possess a heartfelt sympathy for the suffering of his fellow human beings."
