| July 4, 2009 Statue of Liberty's crown back in business

(NECN/ABC) - For the first time in nearly eight years, visitors are climbing the narrow, winding steps to the lookout windows in the Statue of Liberty's crown.
The statue was closed following the Sept. 11 attacks.
The National Park Service reopened the base, pedestal, and observation deck in 2004.
The crown was re-opened with special ceremonies that included members of the armed services taking the oath of citizenship.
Several of the first visitors had come as children and wanted their youngsters to have the experience.
One California couple made their day even more memorable. After climbing the 354 steps to the top of Lady Liberty, he ask her to marry him -- and she said yes.
Many of the visitors noted the physical exertion, but thought it was worth it.
"Some day, God-willing, I'll have my kids here and they will get to enjoy this experience, and maybe by then I will have caught my breath," Rep. Anthony Weiner said.
You need a special ticket to make the trek to the crown. Tickets are currently on sale for the fall. This July 4th weekend sold out within hours.
ABC's Deirdre Bryant reports.
