Deadly accidents mar 4th of July weekend

(NECN: Michelle Brown, Walpole, Mass.) - It was a deadly start to the holiday weekend in New England, as eight people were killed in a number of accidents in Massachusetts alone.

Massachusetts State Police said that this is shaping up to be one of the deadliest July 4th weekends in the state's history.

Just after midnight Saturday, a four car crash in Quincy left one man dead. Another person was left in critical condition. Police were still investigating a cause in that crash.

At 2:43 Saturday morning, police said a 23-year-old Plymouth man was driving north on Route 95 in Attleboro, when he lost control of his car, veered off the road, rolled over and struck a tree. Three men, all in their 20s, died at the scene. Another was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

"All four did not have seatbelts on," Lt. David Wilson said. "Seatbelts save lives -- seatbelts would have helped in all crashes."

On Friday evening, a Sudbury man was killed in a single car crash. Police said that speed appeared to be a factor.

In Walpole, an early morning crash on East Street left three people dead. Police said an SUV traveled off the roadway and slammed into this tree.

Speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the cause of the accident, according to police. None of the four occupants were wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, 31-year-old Jason Wayne Spurlin of Lake Worth, Florida, was the only person to survive the crash. He was

being charged with three counts of motor vehicle homicide by operating under the influence.

NECN's Michelle Brown reports.
