| October 17, 2009 Weekend Nor'easter raises threat of coastal flooding

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Scituate, Mass.) - New England is dealing with a Nor'easter in October. This weekend beach erosion could be a big concern.
Windblown waves crashing along the coast of Scituate, Massachusetts - an ominous sign of weather that's here - and more of what's to come.
Neighbors told us last night was a wild night, that their house was shaking from the wind.
Allen Riley drove across the state from his home in Douglas to reinforce his summer home in Scituate that sits at water's edge.
He's used to seeing the waves come over the rock wall and under the stilts.
"Just damage to the wood shingles down below and in the winter now I board them up and that prevents it," Riley said.
The weather experts say this is the first of a four day Nor'easter that will strengthen through the weekend - and likely bring coastal flooding along the Massachusetts shoreline.
New to the neighborhood is the Donovan family, taking this storm in stride.
"I think it's pretty interesting, it hasn't been a great summer so the fall is going right into winter, so it hasn't been, it's been a tough year overall weather wise. But this is exciting, you get to see the big waves and this her first experience with a Nor'easter," said Dave Donovan out for a walk with his young daughter Addison and dog Bailey.
At low tide, 50 yards from the ocean it's dry.
About four hours later at 10:30pm when it's high tide, the rocks will be covered
with water.
It's not just the waves that come crashing over the seawall, but what the water brings with it.
And that's what Scituate Duathlon race founder Stacey Zawel is sweeping out of the way.
Saturday morning, 600 athletes will be running and riding through in a race they call the Scarecrow, and don't want to bike through the rocks.
We reminded her the waves were expected to pick up overnight and that she may have to come back to sweep again in the morning.
"I'll be up at 5 in the morning to take care of anything," she said.
There have been some reports of windows broken here in Scituate, some erosion, but no serious damage so far.
