July 19, 2008 Obama lands in Afghanistan, visits U.S. bases Play video

(NECN/ABC) - Barack Obama started a campaign-season tour of combat zones and foreign capitals Saturday by touching down in Afghanistan -- the scene of a war he says deserves more attention.

Obama and his congressional delegation met with top military leaders and troops at Bagram Air Field -- the main U.S. Base in the country.

They also met with troops in eastern Afghanistan's Jalalabad Air Field. The province's governor was also present for the meeting.

Obama has come under criticism by John McCain's campaign for his lack of time showing support of U.S. Troops in battle zones.

After embarking on this trip, McCain then showed disappointment in the amount of time it took Obama to make this visit.

Obama's congressional delegation is expected to make stops in Iraq and Europe along the way.
