Is a Market Basket Resolution Ahead?

Ted Clark of Northeastern University and retired judge John Crastley react to Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick telling employees to return with a deal in the works

Wednesday, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick waded a bit further into the labor standoff, which has put the future of Market Basket and its 25,000 employees in jeopardy.

The governor urged workers to return to the job.

Several hundred workers are refusing to work in protest of the firing of longtime CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.

Gov. Patrick says he's spoken with the ousted CEO and the chairman of the Market Basket board, controlled by cousin Arthur S. Demoulas.

The governor says an agreement to sell the majority stake of the company to Arthur T. Demoulas is in the works, but the details are still being worked out.

A statement on the "We Are Market Basket," website which represents supporters of Artie T., indicates the workers have no plans to return to work yet.

Ted Clark, executive director of the Center for Family Business at Northeastern University, and retired Massachusetts Superior Court Judge John Crastley joined Wendy Murphy on Broadside to discuss the updates.

"The bright light, it seems to me, is the fact that the two parties spoke with the governor - Arthur T. and Arthur S. spoke with the governor, said they're working on a deal, sounds like maybe the price is in agreement, and, as you suggested, the details have to be worked out," said Crastley.

"Everything they've asked for is reasonable. They've had a great working relationship with the management team, they've had a great company to work for, but for some reason, the ownership and the people that actually have a vote on who's the CEO have decided to make a change," said Clark.
