Dean of Seminarians: Pope Francis Will Put Personal Stamp on His Papacy

(NECN) - The inauguration mass of Pope Francis has concluded at the Vatican. It was a day of great symbolism and ceremony, and one that the new pontiff made his own.

Father Thomas Schmitt, dean of seminarians from Blessed John the 23rd Seminary in Weston, Mass., joins us to talk about the ceremony.

There was a moving moment that happened before the ceremony even began when Pope Francis reached out to people in the crowd from his open air vehicle. At one point, he got off his vehicle and blessed a severely disabled man.

“I think he’s going to put his own personal stamp on his papacy. Already we see that there’s spontaneity there and a special emphasis for the poor and disadvantaged. He’s going to make that a hallmark, reaching out to people, especially the hurting.”

Father Schmitt says we’re all learning his new style, but we will see real continuity.
