Beams Fall Off Truck Injuring 1 Motorist

38-year-old Vinod George says he feels lucky to be alive after the freak accident

Vinod George feels lucky to be alive after a freak accident on his way to his IT job in Marlboro, Massachusetts, Thursday morning.

The 38-year-old father of three from Lexington was driving down Trapelo Road in Waltham when a truck exiting I-95 North turning into the lane opposite him started to lose its load of concrete beams.

"At that point I knew, I was going to be hit," he said.

George said he slammed on the brakes as the restraint on the back of the flatbed gave way and the heavy beams started flying toward him.

"One end is hanging on the truck and the other end is swinging right into my direction," George said, "there was only like, you know, 20-25 feet between me and this beam that is coming at me, and I couldn't do anything."

He remembers hearing a loud bang and then seeing smoke rising from his Honda Pilot SUV.

George said he "got out of the car and said 'Thank you Lord, I'm alive!'"

George walked away with a few bruises on his hand and body aches from the air bags deploying, but amazingly no broken bones. He said he knows this accident could have ended very differently and feels very grateful to be able to be home holding his 6-week-old daughter and laughing with his 8- and 10-year-old sons.

"I'm really grateful that he's okay and not hurt," 8-year-old Tim said.

"Because cars you can buy and people you can't," added his 10-year-old son Josh.

Looking at the damage to his totaled SUV, George feels there was a higher power watching over him today.

"I think it's the hand of God that saved my life," George said.

The driver of the truck carrying the beams has not yet been identified.

Police say that driver will face a charge for having an "unsecure load."
