Dispatcher On Leave for Turning Away Spanish-Speaking Callers

Police in Lawrence, Massachusetts, say a dispatcher has been placed on leave for mishandling calls.

The dispatcher is accused of turning away callers who only spoke Spanish.

The Lawrence Police chief says the calls were discovered late last year during a routine audit. The dispatcher was put on notice at that time.

Authorities have not identified the dispatcher, but say the employee of eight years has a history of similar violations. She is now on administrative leave and will remain to be pending an investigation.

About 75 percent of Lawrence residents speak Spanish. According to Lawrence Police, protocol is to connect them with a translator.
