Hundreds of people gathered in Providence and Boston on Thursday to protest the shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer in Missouri.

Nearly 200 protesters held a peaceful rally in Providence on Thursday night to show their support for residents of Ferguson, Missouri, where the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown last weekend sparked protests and clashes between demonstrators and police.

Hundreds also gathered on the Boston Common on Thursday night, according to the Boston Globe. Police described the protesters were "very peaceful."

The demonstrations were just two of many held across the country Thursday night to denounce what protesters called excessive force by Ferguson police.

The Providence Journal reports that people at the Providence rally stood in a wide circle and held signs saying "stop police brutality," ''end the war on black people," ''hands up don't shoot" and "don't let bullies wear badges." Some demonstrators also spoke about police actions toward them or their relatives.
