A Biddeford, Maine, man is facing animal cruelty charges for allegedly leaving a dog and a cat in a foreclosed home for two weeks without food.

Police announced Monday that 61-year-old Bruce Friedel has been charged with cruelty to animals, failure to provide necessary sustenance, failure to provide medical attention and failure to provide shelter.

Police acting on a tip found the animals earlier this month.

Inside they found the malnourished animals living among their own waste. Both had significant health problems and the house had an "overpowering smell of urine, feces and filth." There was no evidence of food or water for the animals, which are now recovering at a shelter.

Police say they were left behind when the home was foreclosed on and Friedel moved out.
