Mixed Weather Bag for Memorial Day Weekend

Sunny to start, storms coming Monday

Memorial Day Weekend will feature a wide variety of weather, ranging from hot to stormy.

Saturday will be the warmest and best beach day of the weekend, with hazy, hot, and humid conditions overspreading New England. Highs will surge close to 90 for most communities, excluding south facing coastlines where a southwest wind will act as a seabreeze. That breeze will be gusty at times for the Cape and Islands, where highs will top out in the 70s.

If Boston makes it to 90, it would be the first 90-plus reading since last September. The average first 90 doesn't come until June 8.

An isolated thunderstorm is possible during the day on Saturday, but the vast majority of the day will be dry. Air quality will also be poor, which will impact sensitive groups.

Changes arrive on Sunday, as a backdoor cold front slides through New England. That will leave Maine, Eastern New Hampshire, and most of Eastern Massachusetts in a cooler air mass. Highs will top out in the 60s and 70s there with some low clouds at times.

Inland, on the warmer side of the front, expect another day of 80s to near 90 with noticeable humidity. Along the front scattered storms will flare up during the afternoon. Some of those will likely be strong. These will be typical summer time hit and miss storms. Cancelling plans outright is unnecessary, but it would be wise to have a backup plan in case you need to move inside on short notice.

By Monday we shift our attention to the south, where Tropical Depression Two is swirling. That system, which may become Tropical Storm Bonnie with only a bit of strengthening, will send a plume of tropical moisture into New England. That means it will be muggy with tropical downpours for the holiday itself.

Unfortunately this will likely impact Memorial Day parades, ceremonies, and holiday travel as well. Some areas will get around an inch of rain.
