Maine's two biggest utility companies say the number of households still in the dark after a weekend snowstorm has fallen below 9,000.

Central Maine Power says its number of outages is down to 1,622 as of noon on Thursday. Emera Maine's number fell to 6,957 by 11 a.m.

The Sunday storm left more than 140,000 customers in the dark. It was also blamed on one death. Twenty-eight-year-old Danielle Moores of Lubec lost control of her pickup truck in Trescott at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday during the snow.

Emera says more than half of the remaining outages are in Hancock County.
