Menino Will Not Let Cancer Slow Him Down

(NECN: Leslie Gaydos, Boston) - Boston's long-time mayor, Tom Menino, is in the fight of his life. He recently revealed that he's been diagnosed with cancer. Menino has no plans of letting it slow him down.

Since leaving office, the 71-year-old has settled into a new job at Boston University. Menino is the co-director of the university's new Initiative on Cities.

Despite the cancer diagnosis, Menino plans to keep on working while undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Boston University said they'll support him every step of the way.

He has an advanced form of an unknown cancer. It has spread to the liver and lymph nodes.

Menino was at a Dorchester farmer's market Sunday for a book signing. A number of children wrote a book about him after he left office in January.

Menino's been overwhelmed with the support he's received from the city of Boston.

"We're a family city. We all know each other. We all care about each other. When something happens to somebody else, we all rally," said Menino.

He's confident he'll win his battle with cancer.
