Opening of Floodgates Stops River's Rise in New Orleans

(NECN/CNN: Eileen Curran) - President Obama was in Tennessee today, spending part of his trip meeting with Memphis flood victims.

The story has shifted downstream to Louisiana. Towns there have been inundated with water since Saturday in an attempt to save larger populated areas.

The opening of gates of the Morganza Spillway, the so called "relief valve" for the Mississippi ...appears to have stopped the river's rise in New Orleans.

But Cajun country is getting slammed. People there can only watch as the floodwaters destroy their homes and businesses.
