    Sciatica pain impacts about 40 percent of people, but there are a range of exercises that can help to ease the discomfort. 

    The pain caused by sciatica is numbing and searing, according to Maggie Downie, the founder of Personal Euphoria. Because it is the thickest nerve in the body, pain can also appear in the butt, thigh and calf, and take three weeks to six months to relieve.

    “Some people describe it as razor blades going down your leg,” said Downie.

    Sciatica pain can impede your ability to sit in cars, tie your shoe and sit in bed at night. Ninety-eight percent of the time, sciatica is caused by a herniated disk, which means that one of the vertebrae disks is compressing the nerve.

    If you experience sciatica pain, it is important to stay moving by participating in walking and swimming. One exercise to relieve discomfort is done by lying down on your stomach on a firm surface with your elbows propped up. Another, called "the Lean," is done by standing a foot away from the wall, bending the arm closest to the wall, and then leaning against the wall while dropping the hips in that direction.
