Maine Man Running to DC for Obama's Inauguration

(NECN: Marnie MacLean) - A Maine man is taking the long way to the presidential inauguration in Washington DC because he's running all 700 miles.

Gary Allen started Monday on the top of Cadillac Mountain and crossed into New Hampshire on Friday. He is averaging about 50 miles a day and hopes to arrive in Washington on January 21st.

"Everyone has an explorer inside of them, and some dare to dig in there and find out what it is," Allen said.

It does help that Allen knows his way around a marathon. He's run 86 of them, 20 in Boston. In fact, he runs Boston twice a year. Once on race day, and once by himself on New Year's Day.

This run is new, and as much for others as himself. He's raising money for three organizations: The Wounded Warrior Project, the American Cancer
Society and the students of Sandy Hook Elementary school. In fact, Allen's route takes him through Newtown, Conn.

Mostly, he travels alone but he's been happily surprised when others have heard of his run and join him along the route.

People can make donations and follow Allen every step of the way along his journey through his website.
