Review: 606 Congress

(TV Diner) - Modern dcor, high ceilings and eclectic music characterize the atmosphere at the 606 Congress restaurant in the Seaport District's Renaissance Hotel. Passing the curved marble bar at the entrance, diners descend to the seating area featuring a communal chef's table that faces the open kitchen. Two private dining rooms accommodate business groups up to 25.

We started with butter poached lobster; half a crustacean swimming in a curried butter sauce with fingerling potato slices and diced parsnips. Our high expectations were diminished as the parsnips were undercooked and the lobster had not been deveined.

The spicy tuna tartar tostadas were four fresh tortilla chips topped with a "salsa" of chopped tuna and cilantro. The thin, crisp chips were anchored to the plate with a mildly spicy and smoky mayonnaise. You don't want to miss these so hurry in, our server said that this may not be on the new spring menu.

Braised lamb shank was a Flintstone-sized piece of meat served on a bed of mixed root vegetables, white beans and salsify. The lamb was "fall off the bone" tender; moist without being greasy. A taste of this dish confirms why 606 won the 2010 Lamb Jam in the shank category!

The pan seared salmon was served skin-side up on a bed of napa cabbage, salsify and black trumpet mushrooms with a dash of curried hollandaise. The crisp skin was a nice contrast to the fresh, tender fish and meaty mushrooms.

Fans of broccoli rabe will enjoy a side of vibrant green spears brightened in taste and appearance by flakes of red pepper.

Bread pudding is a favorite and the 606's white chocolate recipe didn't disappoint. Crisp on the edges and perfectly cooked inside; a dressing of caramel sauce and plump raisins made this dish a real winner.

Pumpkin panna cotta is a seasonal twist on this Italian favorite. The silky custard was accompanied by cinnamon whipped cream and playfully sprinkled with caramel popcorn. A perfect ending for those wanting a light dessert.

Our knowledgeable server shared her favorites and helped us make our choices by graciously bringing tastes of drinks and desserts.

Based on a menu of old favorites prepared with a flair, in a modern hotel setting, 606 Congress receives the Gold Plate.
