(TV Diner) - Radiating rustic charm, Rye Tavern, located within the Pine hills in Plymouth, Massachusetts sits pretty in a restored roadhouse that served as a popular way station in colonial days. Exposed beams, wide pine floors, soft recessed lighting and a cozy fireplace set an inviting scene. But does its menu of upscale country fare compare to the pleasant atmosphere?
Up first was a trio of pan fried ravioli filled with delectable confit chicken, surrounded by asparagus and topped with farm cheese. Absolutely delicious.
And three hearty mini beef Wellingtons were equally scrumptious. Sliced meat with mushroom puree and spinach enveloped in puff pastry was ample enough for a full meal, but we reluctantly put down our forks to save room for the main event.
The chili sugar-cured pork chop with gouda cornbread strata and braised cabbage was definitely a culinary affair to remember. The bold flavors melded together beautifully to create a unique taste sensation.
And Rye Tavern's posh version of beef stew was a plate scraper. Tender boneless short ribs braised in red wine atop soft polenta with root vegetables and caramelized onion was pure comfort and joy.
Desserts however were a mixed bag.
An apple cranberry crumb pie with vanilla ice cream was definitely delectable. But a pear and ginger cake was too dense in texture and intense in spice for our palates.
Local
No complaints about service at Rye Tavern. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and kept a watchful eye on us from a distance. But diners take note; when crowded the noise level is quite high in this otherwise appealing establishment. Voices definitely carry.
Considering its plentiful portions and classy character prices are wallet-friendly at Rye Tavern, with appetizers $6 to $12; entrees $17 to $30; and desserts running $7. And the menu changes frequently, translating into a new experience virtually with each visit.
All in all, this treasure of a tavern deserves and will receive a glowing Gold Plate.
