Surveillance Video Expert on Boston Blast Suspects' Photos

(NECN) - Dr. James Ionson, a video surveillance expert, joined NECN after the FBI released images they say are of two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

"First of all, the quality of the imagery is very good, and I have no doubt that the suspects will be tracked down and apprehended," he says.

Dr. Ionson says, based on the data existed before the bombs actually exploded, that analytical techniques could have prevented the bombings from happening.

"It has to do with behavior patterns and the imagery is looked at, and the imagery, you notice, there are two individuals carrying backpacks, not many people are carrying backpacks watching the Boston Marathon. They're walking, they're coordinated together, they take their heavy backpacks off and they place them some where and walk away. There are techniques that exist today that can detect that kind of anomalous behavior and send out an alert," he says.
