Waltham, Mass. High Schooler Killed, Police Searching for Suspect

(NECN: Greg Wayland, Waltham, Mass.) - A 17-year-old was fatally shot at an apartment complex in Waltham, Mass.

Tyler Zanco, captain of the Waltham High School wrestling team, was fatally shot.

"He was always trying to joke around and have fun. Just make other people happy," said classmate, David Boban.

According to police, Zanco was shot in a parking lot at the Gardencrest apartments on Thursday night.

Police have not located the shooter. The suspect's motive is unknown.

"I didn't even believe it at first," said Boban.

The apartment complex is a tight-knit, crime-watch community that hundreds call home.

Back in November, a 20-year-old woman was arrested for shooting and wounding a 20-year-old man.

Late Friday, Waltham Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Nicholson released a statement that says in part, "Staff and students at Waltham High School and in the district mourn the profound loss of a member of our high school. As a school community, we have come together to support one another during this difficult time .... We have encouraged all students to seek out an adult if they feel confused, unsafe or simply need to talk to someone."
