Boston Firefighters Union Files Suit Against Walsh Administration

One of the largest unions in Boston has filed a lawsuit against Mayor Marty Walsh's administration alleging repeated violations to the union's collective bargaining agreement.

The lawsuit filed by Boston Fire Fighters Local 718 names the city and Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn and cites three instances where a firefighter's status was changed from injured leave to sick leave or light duty, the Boston Globe reported Thursday. This change forced firefighters to either work or use up sick time.

The union alleges that the city acted "in an arbitrary manner and without justification or cause" in changing three firefighters' status.

The union has asked in the suit for a judicial ruling to prevent the city from taking similar action until the matter is solved through arbitration.

A spokeswoman for the mayor said the city would not comment on a pending lawsuit.

President of the union, Robert Petitti, did not return a call to the Globe for comment.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday in Suffolk Superior Court.
