Twenty-two cows died in a barn fire in Dexter, Maine, that firefighters battled during a bitterly cold and snowy morning.

The Portland Press Herald reports 17 of the cows were calves and five were adult cows. The fire happened Monday morning at a farm on Ripley Road. Crews remained at the scene until after 5 p.m.

Authorities say no people were hurt in the fire and about 75 other cows escaped. The Maine state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze, which brought 12 fire departments to the scene.

A local fire department says the farm is known in the areas as the Sherburne Farm and it was recently purchased by a new owner. Authorities did not identify that person.
