Dad, 2 Teens Rescued From Icy Pond in Maine

All three treated for hypothermia

A father and two teenage girls were hospitalized Wednesday night after their snowmobile went into an icy pond in Southwest Harbor, Maine.

Eli Strauss, 43, his daughter Julia, and her friend Jolie Beal, both 12, were on a snowmobile just offshore of Long Pond when they went through the ice, according to Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Spokesperson Corporal John MacDonald.

Authorities said the three were able to get to shore and Eli Strauss began to trek through the woods for help.

When the trio hadn't returned home at the time expected, Strauss' wife called police and a search of the area began.

Police first located the teens, who were yelling for help along the shore of the pond. Eli Strauss was located a short time later in the woods. Authorities said he was unable to walk due to hypothermic symptoms.

All three were taken to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor to be treated for hypothermia. Their conditions are said to be good.

The Maine Warden Service plans to return to Long Pond on Thursday to assess the ice conditions.
