4-Alarm Fire Ravages Vacant Motel

A large fire has destroyed a vacant motel in Old Orchard Beach, Maine

A four-alarm fire has destroyed a vacant motel in downtown Old Orchard Beach, but there were no reported injuries.

Firefighters responded to the Americana Motel at about 9 p.m. Tuesday to find flames already hooting out of the top floor of the two-story structure.

It took about 80 firefighters from several area departments to get the blaze under control.

Assistant Town Manager V. Louise Reid tells WMTW-TV that the building had been unoccupied for several weeks.

Old Orchard Beach Fire Chief Rick Plummer says high winds accelerated the blaze.

It is believed the fire started on the second floor, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

Electricity in the building had been turned off.
