Maine Could Raise Age Limit to Marry to 16 Years Old

Maine could prevent any child under the age of 16 from marrying under a Democrat's bill.

Democratic Sen. David Miramant's bill is set for a Tuesday public hearing.

Miramant's bill would prohibit the issuance of marriage licenses to individuals under 16 years of age, no matter the circumstance.

Currently, Maine allows issues marriage licenses to be issued to individuals under 16 with written parental consent.

A local county probate judge have to decide whether it's in minor's best interest and consider whether the other individual has a criminal record.

New Hampshire recently changed its minimum age of marriage to 16, up from 13 for girls and 14 for boys.
