Officials say a 71-year-old Maine man is facing charges after he refused to stop for sheriff's deputies and police until after a police officer disabled his vehicle by shooting at its tires.

The incident began around 8 a.m. Saturday when authorities began searching for a man believed to be experiencing a severe medical issue.

A few minutes later the vehicle was spotted on Route 1 in Northport. The car was stopped briefly police on a number of occasions, but the driver continued to flee. The chase ended after a Searsport police officer fired his weapon, disabling the vehicle.

The driver, James Thomas, of Camden, was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. He's facing a variety of charges.

It's unclear if Thomas has an attorney.
