Maine emergency officials are advising residents of the state to take emergency precautions even though the coming tropical weather system is unlikely to cause major damage in the state.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency says on Friday that residents should gather emergency supplies as a precaution in case the storm has a bigger impact in Maine than expected. The National Weather Service in Gray says Hurricane Joaquin's presence could be felt in the form of higher than average waves and wind on Monday.

A spokeswoman for the Maine Emergency Management Agency says state emergency officials will meet Friday afternoon to discuss preparedness plans for the state.
