An elementary school principal in Augusta, Maine, once named a National Distinguished Principal of the year is resigning after more than 100 student test scores were thrown out because of irregularities.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Lori Smail, of Winthrop, had been principal at Farrington Elementary School principal for four years.
The superintendent told parents that two rooms where mathematics tests were administered "inappropriately" contained reference sheets and posters. He said the results of the Maine Educational Assessments for 212 mathematics tests would be invalidated.
Smail resigned formally on May 12 to be effective at the end of the year.
Smail said Tuesday she is proud of the work, climate and culture change under her leadership. She said the error was not intentional.
