A trailer full of household items burst into flames along Interstate 95 Wednesday while being towed by a truck in Sidney, Maine.

The fire erupted at about 7 a.m., according to state police. The driver, identified as Curt Hopkins, 45, was alerted by a passerby that the trailer hitched to the back of his truck was aflame.

Hopkins detached his 14-foot-long trailer in the breakdown lane near the Sidney-Waterville exit. Both southbound lanes were shut down until Waterville and Sidney Fire Departments could respond.

No one was injured, but traffic was disrupted for about an hour. Hopkins was hauling items to Florida for a client. The trailer and all of its contents were destroyed.

Corporal Rick Moody suspects that the fire may have started from a mechanical problem in the trailer's axle.
